The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially rescheduled the 2027 general elections and released a revised timetable following the enactment of the new Electoral Act 2026.
The adjustment comes after the repeal of the Electoral Act 2022, which previously guided the election timeline.
New Dates for 2027 Presidential and Governorship Elections
Mohammed Kudu Haruna, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, in a statement said the revised dates for the Presidential and National Assembly Elections is now January 16, 2027 while the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections will hold on February 6, 2027
The elections were initially scheduled for 20 February and 6 March 2027 under the repealed 2022 Electoral Act.
INEC explained that the rescheduling became necessary to align fully with the statutory timelines introduced by the Electoral Act 2026.
Ramadan Concerns and Voter Turnout
The earlier election dates had generated reactions from Muslim faithful, who expressed concerns that the schedule could coincide with the fasting month of Ramadan, potentially affecting voter turnout in several states.
While INEC did not explicitly cite religious concerns as the basis for the adjustment, the new dates shift the elections away from the anticipated Ramadan period in 2027.
Osun Governorship Election Also Shifted
INEC also announced a change in the date for the Osun State governorship election. The poll, initially slated for August 8, 2026, has now been moved to August 15, 2026.
The commission noted that while some activities for the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections have already been concluded, all remaining processes will strictly comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
Revised Political Party Primaries and Campaign Timeline
Under the updated 2027 election timetable:
– Party Primaries: 23 April to 30 May 2026 (including dispute resolution)
– Presidential and National Assembly Campaigns: Begin 19 August 2026
– Governorship and State Assembly Campaigns: Begin 9 September 2026
INEC emphasized that all political campaigns must end at least 24 hours before election day, in accordance with electoral regulations.
Tinubu Signs Electoral Act 2026 Into Law
President Bola Tinubu signed the Electoral Act 2026 into law on 18 February 2026 following its passage by the National Assembly. The new legislation introduced adjustments to statutory timelines governing pre-election processes and other electoral activities.
INEC stated that it has reviewed and realigned the election schedule to ensure full compliance with the new legal framework.
Implications for Political Parties and Voters
The revised 2027 general election timetable is expected to significantly impact political party strategies, campaign planning, and voter mobilization efforts nationwide.
With the updated schedule now in place, stakeholders—including political parties, candidates, and civil society groups—are expected to adjust their preparations in line with the Electoral Act 2026 as Nigeria gears up for another crucial democratic transition.
